I recently entered the Twitter-sphere, a world of 140 characters and hash-tagging.
A world where more than 340 million bite-sized pieces of information, or tweets, happen every day.
At first when students and staff started to encourage me to join I thought why would I get involved with such a thing? The messages seemed so short. But then I started to look into it a bit more. There are so many ANU staff and students who are out there talking about their research activities.
As the Vice-Chancellor of ANU I am immensely privileged. I spend lots of my time representing the ANU community at events like the opening of the new Supercomputer for example, or meeting our newest international students.
I’m not just a person who appears at graduations and on the news occasionally. I spend my time in meetings and intense discussions about all sorts of issues, from the links between innovation and funding through to sitting on academic committees who oversee the education and research direction of the University.
I think that twitter is a way that I can share some of that with you.
With my new twitter handle I am hoping to provide regular tweets about our remarkable institution, its people and the world-leading education and research that happens here. I’ll be trying to keep you up to date with a hint of what it is like to be a Vice-Chancellor and also share some of the articles that I’ve been reading lately.
