We’ve all been speaking about university funding lately.
But what hasn’t been looked at very closely so far is Australian university funding models in comparison to international models.
In this video, I explain my thoughts on the Australian model, where student revenue essentially cross-subsidises research, and I compare it to international universities which are both diverse in their makeup being focused either on education or research and in their funding sources.
The Australian model has led to universities that grow their student populations in relation to the size of their research.
ANU is the only outlier to this homogenous group, retaining a relatively small student population. In this way ANU is similar in its makeup to the world¹s most highly ranked research institutions.
In the video I also explain my concerns about the sustainability of the Australian model, and what it means for education and research quality in the future.
