Self-education cap lifted

student writing in textbook

Dear Colleagues,

I welcome an announcement made today by Treasurer Joe Hockey and Assistant Treasurer Arthur Sinodinos that the Coalition Government will reverse the cap on tax deductibility of self-education expenses.

This issue has been of particular to concern to ANU, where we have a large number of students – many of them in the ACT and Federal Public Service and defence forces – who access the cap to undertake further study.

In Canberra this would have been a double-whammy. Canberrans would have been discouraged from further study, and such a decline in enrolments would add to the financial pressure facing the University.

This is a welcome decision for ANU, and for the whole sector.
